✨ Pro Tips!✨

Read Before Attending Drop-Ins 😊

Good morning, Media Students!

Registration season is here! šŸŽ‰ As time tickets begin opening, I know many of you will have questions about your schedules. Before attending drop-ins or sending an email, please take a few minutes to review the information below.

šŸ“– Homework:Ā Please read this entire email before reaching out.

ā° Need to find your time ticket?

Self-Service Banner → Students → Registration, Schedule, and Planning → Prepare for Registration → Select Spring 2027

šŸ” Not sure what to register for?

Before meeting with me, please do some research and problem-solving on your own:

āœ… Check yourĀ Stellic PlanĀ (Student → Stellic → Go to Planner)

āœ… Check yourĀ Stellic AuditĀ (Student → Stellic → See Progress → Official or Planned)

āœ… Review any advising emails from previous appointments

āœ… Look for alternate courses if your first-choice classes are full

āœ… Review any notes or planning documents from previous meetings

For most students, the answer is already in Stellic or a previous advising email.

🧩 Registration is a puzzle

One of the most important skills you'll develop in college is learning how to solve problems independently.

Before emailing me or attending drop-ins, ask yourself:

  • Have I checked Stellic?

  • Have I reviewed my advising notes/email?

  • Are there other required classes I could take?

  • Could I use aĀ general elective, core class, or minor course this semester?

  • Have I looked for alternate sections?

Try a few solutions first. If you're still stuck, I'm happy to help! 😊

🚨 Register for credits first! Media classes fill quickly!

āœ”ļø Register as soon as your time ticket opens.

āœ”ļø Aim forĀ 12-15 credit hours.

āœ”ļø Don't wait for a waitlist result before registering.

āœ”ļø You can always adjust later if a preferred course becomes available.

šŸ“ Join waitlists

  • Add yourself to available waitlists: How to Add Yourself to a Course Waitlist.pdf

  • Continue registering for backup courses.

  • Check schedules regularly for openings.

  • Students add and drop courses every day during registration.

šŸŽÆ Don't panic if a class is full

Many Media students still have severalĀ "120 Total Credits"Ā placeholders in Stellic.

Those areĀ General ElectivesĀ (click link for ideas), which means you may have more flexibility than you think.

You can often stay on track by taking:

  • General electives

  • Core Curriculum courses

  • Minor coursework

  • Double-major coursework

Remember:Ā The goal is to keep making progress toward graduation, not necessarily to take every class in a specific semester (there are exceptions to this) šŸŽ“ If you are unable to register for a course that you know you need in the spring to stay on track to graduate, please add yourself to the waitlist (if possible) and contact me.Ā

šŸŽ„ Get involved

If a semester includes fewer Media courses than expected, consider joining Media organizations, student media, or other department opportunities. Experience outside the classroom matters, too!

šŸ›Ÿ Need help?

Schedule an appointmentĀ through Navigate or attend drop-in hours.Ā

šŸ“ Drop-In Expectations

To help as many students as possible during registration, please come prepared.

āœ… Bring your laptop (fully charged).

āœ… Have Stellic and Self-Service Banner available.

āœ… Complete the research steps above before arriving.

āœ… Have specific questions ready.

ā±ļø Please plan for drop-in conversations to last about 10-15 minutes.

Drop-ins are designed to help with immediate registration concerns.

If you would like to discuss:

  • Long-term graduation planning

  • Career goals

  • Future semester planning

  • Success Strategies

  • Other curriculum changes that do not immediately affect registration

please schedule a regular appointment through Navigate or the red link in my signature.

I genuinely enjoy getting to know each of you and talking through your goals, but registration drop-ins are not the best setting for those longer conversations 😊

šŸ“Ā New Check-In Location: BC 210

  1. Enter through the double doors (former Digital Corps space)

  2. Scan your ID at the check-in computer (or enter your ID number manually)

  3. Click the greenĀ Check InĀ button

    • If multiple advisors appear, selectĀ Jayne Rohlfing

  4. Have a seat close by and wait to be called

See email for hours. Each week is different!

āš ļø Wait times may occur during drop-ins, and I may not be able to see everyone before hours end.

Thank you for helping keep drop-ins moving smoothly. The more preparation you do beforehand, the more students I can help and the more productive our time together will be.

You've got this! šŸ’ŖšŸ˜Š

General Elective Ideas

šŸ”“ ā€œGeneral electiveā€ is really just a term to describe any class that isn’t counting towards a major/minor or core curriculum requirement but might be needed to reach the 120 credits required to grad
